GAAS Council Engages Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman (FGA) in Strategic Dialogue

The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS), in its commitment to fostering intellectual discourse and evidence-based policymaking, hosted Prof. Peter Quartey, FGA’s inaugural lecture on March 13, 2025, at the GAAS auditorium in Accra. As part of GAAS’s efforts to shape national economic discussions, the lecture explored the theme “Debt, Investment, and Growth in Ghana: Did We Borrow to Consume?”, providing critical insights into the country’s fiscal challenges and policy direction.

A delegation from the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) paid a courtesy call on Her Excellency Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, at Jubilee House on March 19, 2025. The meeting aimed to strengthen ties between the Academy and the government, advocating for enhanced research-driven policies and greater institutional support.

The GAAS Council, headed by the Academy’s president, Emerita Professor Isabella Akyinbah Quakyi (FGA), expressed appreciation for the government’s continuous support and congratulated the Vice President on her historic election as Ghana’s first female Vice President.

During the meeting, Emerita Professor Isabella Akyinbah Quakyi (FGA) raised key issues, including the need to enhance the Academy’s visibility in the national discourse, strengthen collaboration with government institutions, and secure increased research funding for sciences and Arts. The delegation also outlined its planned programmes for the year and extended an invitation to the Vice President to participate in upcoming events.

In response, Vice President Opoku-Agyeman (FGA) commended GAAS for its vast expertise across multiple disciplines and encouraged the Academy to expand its reach beyond Accra to ensure national impact. She emphasized the importance of political neutrality in the activities of GAAS and pledged her unwavering support for the Academy’s mission.

As part of the visit, the delegation presented a citation to the Vice President, recognizing her achievements and contributions to education and national development. She was also gifted GAAS publications as a token of appreciation.

This meeting signifies a strengthened collaboration between academia and government, fostering an environment where research and policy development go hand in hand for national progress. The delegation included GAAS Council Members Emerita Prof. Isabella Akyinbah Quakyi (President), Prof. Alfred Apau Oteng-Yeboah (Vice President, Sciences), Emerita Prof. Takyiwaa Manuh (Vice President, Arts), Prof. Peter Quartey (Honorary Treasurer), Prof. Kofi Opoku Nti (Council Member and Immediate Past President), Prof. George Obeng Adjei (Honorary Secretary), Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah (Council Member), and Prof. Ben K. Ahunu (Council Member). GAAS staff present included Mr. Daniel Hormeku (Executive Secretary), Mr. Felix Lartey (Financial Officer), and Ms. Matilda Dennis (Communications Officer).
