Council

Principally two main bodies conduct the Affairs of the Academy: The Council, which is the governing body, and the General meeting of Fellows. The Council comprises the Principal Officers of the Academy namely; the President, two Vice Presidents who are respectively the Chairpersons of the Science and Arts Sections, the Honorary Secretary and the Honorary Treasurer together with six other persons elected by the General Meeting of Fellows from among the Fellows of the Academy. The Council meets at least twice a year.

Emerita Prof. Isabella Akyinba Isabella Quakyi
President

Emerita Professor Isabella Akyinbah Quakyi, the President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, is a distinguished scholar in Immunology and Parasitology. Educated at Achimota Secondary School, holds degrees BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD from the UK, University of Surrey, Brunel, and the LSHTM, respectively from 1973 to 1980. She has dedicated four decades to teaching and research at esteemed institutions worldwide, including the National Institutes of Health and Georgetown University in USA, Queensland University and QIMR, Brisbane Australia, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and the University of Ghana (UG). Quakyi’s groundbreaking research, on malaria immunity and vaccine development, has earned international recognition, and led to the development of the first human malaria vaccine (RTS,S). She co-initiated and co-led the first NIH International Center of Infectious Diseases Research, fostering research capacity in University of Yaounde I, Cameroon. At UG, she established the Immunology Unit at NMIMR, the first female Director of the UG School of Public Health and the Foundation Dean, making her the first female Dean at the CHS, UG, and contributing significantly to international research capacity and leadership development; widely published in reputable journals, has over 100 publications. Her research fellowships and collaborations span institutions worldwide, earned numerous awards and recognitions, including a former UNESCO Chair for Women in Science in the West Africa Region, A Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, 2014 Laureate African Union Kwame Nkrumah Award for Women in Science, the 2019 Clara Southmayd Ludlow award by the ASTMH, Women’s World Day 2021 recognized her as one of seven women in Science who have changed the world for the better. She continues biomedical research capacity building and Knowledge translation in Public Health.

Professor Alfred Apau Oteng-Yeboah is a retired Professor at the University of Ghana. He has taught and trained many students in several African universities, especially in Nigeria, Kenya, and his native Ghana.

He has published extensively in reputable international journals and also provided several feature articles on the Environment and Biodiversity at the local and international levels..

He has chaired many high-profile local and international environmental and biodiversity meetings. He is a founding bureau member and former Vice-Chair representing Africa of the Intergovernmental Science-policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). He has chaired the Steering Committee of the International Partnership for Satoyama Initiative (IPSI), a joint UNU and the Ministry of Japan initiative,  since its establishment in 2010. He chairs the Trusteeship Board of the A Rocha Ghana (ARG), an NGO that advocates for nature and its conservation and sustainable use. He also chairs the Tropenbos Ghana Board.

He was awarded the 2014 international prestigious Midori Prize for Biodiversity and the John C, Phillips Memorial Medal for 2020, the highest global conservation award of the IUCN.

Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah is Professor of Geography, former Head of the Department of Geography and Resource Development, past Dean of the Faculty (School) of Social Sciences, Foundation Provost of the College of Humanities, all at the University of Ghana, and former Provost Visiting Professor (PVP) of Population Health, Imperial College London.

Peter Quartey is a Professor of Economics and the Director, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, University of Ghana.  He is also a board member of Agricultural Development Bank and the Vice Chairman of the Hunger Project Ghana. He is the executive of Startrite Montessori School and Startrite Christian College. He is also a fellow of the prestigious Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.  He is a member of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), the African Economic Research Consortium, the African Econometric Society and the Global Development Network.

A Professor of Minerals Engineering, and currently the Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, Ghana. Her previous positions held in UMaT include Dean of Planning and Quality Assurance Unit, Dean of School of Postgraduate Studies, Dean of Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology, Head of Petroleum Engineering Department, Head of Environmental and Safety Engineering Department, and Coordinator of University Examinations. Grace is the Founder of Ladies in Mining and Allied Professions in Ghana (LiMAP-Gh), the recipient of 2017 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award and Women in Mining UK Award for 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining (WIM100) in 2024.
