GAAS Inducts Six New Fellows into Fellowship

The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) has inducted six distinguished Ghanaian personalities into Fellowship as part of its 2025 Founder’s Week Celebrations, which run from 11th to 14th November 2025. The new Fellows were nominated and inducted on the basis of their outstanding contributions to the fields of arts and sciences.

The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) has inducted six distinguished Ghanaian personalities into Fellowship as part of its 2025 Founder’s Week Celebrations, which run from 11th to 14th November 2025. The new Fellows were nominated and inducted on the basis of their outstanding contributions to the fields of arts and sciences.

The inductees were:

Most Rev.  Bishop Dr. Joseph Osei-Bonsu, Senior Clergyman and Theologian;

Professor Pius Thomas Kumah Agbenorku, Professor of Surgery;

Professor Anna Lartey, Professor of Nutrition;

Professor Francis Hasford, Associate Professor of Medical Physics;

Professor Ing. Samuel Kofi Tulashie, Professor of Chemical and Process Engineering; and

Professor Evelyn Korkor Ansah, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology.

Earlier in her Presidential Address, which marks the first day of the 4-day programme, Emerita Professor Isabella A. Quakyi, the President of the Academy, emphasized the need for Ghana to institutionalize evidence-based and technology-driven policies that transcends political cycles and secure sustainable national development. She highlighted the Academy’s leadership in advancing science and technology as a cornerstone of national progress and reflected on key achievements since assuming office in January 2025, including strengthened governance structures, deeper stakeholder collaboration, and enhanced operational efficiency.

Professor Quakyi congratulated the newly inducted Fellows and commended their leadership and expertise in their various fields, expressing confidence that their inclusion would invigorate the Academy with fresh ideas and renewed energy in advancing knowledge and national development. She reminded all Fellows that the Academy’s strength lies not only in its heritage but in its continuing commitment to excellence. “Together, let us ensure that the ideals of our founders remain vibrant, guiding us toward a future enriched by knowledge and wisdom,” she affirmed.

Speaking on behalf of the newly inducted Fellows, Most Rev.  Bishop Dr. Joseph Osei-Bonsu expressed deep gratitude for the honour and pledged their collective commitment to uphold the highest standards of the Academy. He assured that they will dedicate their knowledge, experience, and expertise to furthering GAAS’s mission, adding, “We look forward to collaborating with our colleagues to foster interdisciplinary engagement that addresses contemporary issues of direct relevance to Ghana.”

Since its inception in 1960, the Academy’s Founder’s Week Lectures have remained a flagship event reflecting the Academy’s steadfast commitment to promoting knowledge, research, and national development. This year’s symposium, themed “Navigating Political Transitions in Ghana: Issues and Lessons,” will culminate in the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Lecture, to be delivered by Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, FGA, Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.

The programme was attended by Fellows of the Academy including past presidents of GAAS, notably Nana S.K. B Asante, Prof. Aba Bentil Andam, Prof. Henrietta Mensa Bonsu, Emeritus Prof. Sefah-Dedeh and Prof. Opoku Nti. Family members, students, mentees as well as colleagues of the inductees also graced the occasion. The Induction ceremony was also well attended by members of the general public.
