The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) proudly celebrates two of its distinguished Fellows—Emeritus Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe (FGA) and Professor Gordon A. Awandare (FGA)—who were honoured at the 2025 Millennium Excellence Awards for their outstanding contributions to science, education, and national development.

Held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the awards ceremony was graced by the esteemed patronage of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene. The Millennium Excellence Awards, one of Ghana’s highest national honours, recognise individuals and institutions whose work has significantly contributed to progress in education, science, governance, and humanitarian service.

Emeritus Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, was awarded for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education. A respected leader in higher education and a passionate advocate for academic excellence, Professor Tagoe has played a pivotal role in shaping tertiary education policy and inspiring generations of students and scholars in Ghana and beyond.

Professor Gordon A. Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs and Founding Director of the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP), received the award for Excellence in Biomedical Research. His groundbreaking work in infectious diseases and his unwavering commitment to building scientific research capacity across Africa have positioned Ghana as a hub for biomedical innovation.

Organized biennially, the Millennium Excellence Awards celebrate individuals and institutions who are making transformative contributions to Ghana’s development. This year’s honours reaffirm not only the individual excellence of Professors Tagoe and Awandare but also the high standards of scholarship that the Academy continues to uphold.

This occasion serves not only as a celebration of individual achievement but also as a reaffirmation of the Academy’s mandate to advance scholarly excellence, foster intellectual leadership, and support the nation’s development through research and knowledge dissemination.
