The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) inducted seven distinguished Ghanaian personalities into Fellowship on Tuesday, 12th November 2024, as part of its Founder’s Week Celebrations, which runs from 12th to 15th November 2024. These individuals were honoured for their outstanding contributions to the fields of Arts and Sciences.
The new Fellows include:
Prof. Samuel Egyir Aggrey – A scientist in poultry nutrigenomics, genetics, and gut health.
Prof. Joe-Nat Afutu Clegg-Lamptey – Renowned as the best breast surgeon in Ghana and the West African sub-region.
Prof. Samuel Nii Ardey Codjoe – A professor of Geography and Soil Science with research spanning geography, population studies, and climate change.
Prof. Godfred Darko – A professor of Chemistry and winner of the 2016 Young Research Award by the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology.
Prof. Emmanuel Bekoe Larbi – A retired professor of medicine and a Fellow of various prestigious medical societies.
Prof. Frederick Yeboah Obese – A professor of Animal Science and research scientist at the Animal Research Institute (ARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
Prof. (Mrs) Ibok Nsa Ekpenyong Oduro – A professor of Postharvest Technology at KNUST in Ghana.
During the induction ceremony, Prof. Kofi Nti, FGA, President of GAAS, congratulated the new Fellows and praised their leadership and expertise, emphasizing that they would strengthen the Academy with new ideas and innovations. He urged them to identify pressing national issues and contribute to the Academy’s mission through volunteerism, participation in debates, and collaboration within their respective chapters.
The Chairperson, Emeritus Prof. Samuel Sefa-Dedeh, immediate Past President of GAAS, remarked that the collective efforts of the Academy’s intellectuals could lead to significant change, provided members remain engaged and committed. He encouraged students in attendance to use the lectures to envision their future roles in both Ghana and beyond.
Prof. (Mrs) Ibok Nsa Ekpenyong Oduro, the only female inductee, spoke on behalf of all the new Fellows, expressing gratitude for the honour and committing to contribute their expertise to the Academy’s activities. She emphasized their readiness to volunteer their time and energy, a value that is already deeply ingrained in them.
GAAS’ Founder’s Week Lectures, which began in 1960, continue to be a key event celebrating the Academy’s commitment to advancing knowledge and research in Ghana. This year’s symposium focuses on “Leveraging the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” and the final day will feature the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Lecture, delivered by Emeritus Prof. Clifford Tagoe, on the topic of “Developments in Higher Education in Ghana.”
