Nana Professor S.K.B. Asante


    Born on May 11, 1933, Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante, Paramount Chief of Asante Asokore, Ghana, known in private life as Samuel Kwadwo Boaten Asante was educated at Achimota School, took an LL.B (Hons) Degree from Nothingham University in 1956, an LL.M. from London University (Kings College and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies) in 1958, and was admitted as a solicitor (Hons) of the Supreme Court of England and to the Ghana Bar in 1960. Nana Professor S.K.B. Asante also possesses Doctor of Juridical Science (JSD) (Yale Law School, USA) in 1965.  He was a pioneer lecturer in law at the Department/Faculty of Law, University of Ghana, Legon (1961-65) and Acting Head of the Law Department in 1962.  He also lectured at the faculty of Law, Leeds University (UK) in 1965-66.



    He has been an Attorney in the Legal Department of the World Bank, Washington DC, and (1966-69). Adjunct Professor of Law at Howard University, Washington D.C (1967-69); Solicitor General and Deputy Attorney-General of Ghana (1969-77); Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law and Business, Temple University Law School, Philadelphia, U.S.A. (1976); Chief Legal Advisor at the UN Centre on Transnational Corporations, (UNCTC), New York, (1977-83); Visiting Fellow of Clare Hall and Visiting Member of the Law Faculty, Cambridge University (1978-79); Director UNCTC (1983-92), Visiting Professor of Law, faculty of Law, University of Ghana (1991), Director-in-charge, Division of Natural Resources, Energy, Environment Science and Technology at the UN, New York, (1993) and Chairman , Public Utility Regulatory Commission of Ghana (1997-2002).

    In 1991-92, Nana was the Chairman of the Committee of Experts that drafted proposals for the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. He is an active international arbitrator, a member of the ICC court of International Arbitration, Paris, as well as several other arbitration institutions, and Co-founder and Chairman of the Ghana Arbitration Centre.

    Nana is a Fellow of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, Hon. Fellow of the Society of Advanced Legal Studies, U.K, Fellow and past president of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Life Member of Clare Hall, Cambridge University and Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Ghana Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

    He has published extensively on international business transactions, transnational corporations, investment law, international law, constitutional law, property law, law and development, and advised numerous governments around the world in these areas.  He has more than fifty publications to his credit and the proud recipient of Ghana Book Award for Distinguished Writers and of National Award; and an Officer of the Order of the Volta.
